International Delivery Issues Need Automated Claims

International e-commerce continues to swell in popularity. According to DHL, three in five (59%) online shoppers now regularly buy from retailers outside of their home country.

While a global customer base is undoubtedly good news for e-commerce businesses, shipping internationally is fraught with logistics issues - from customs regulations and import tariffs to various transportation methods and delivery expectations - that increase the risk of a lost, delayed or damaged shipment.

Instead of buying parcel insurance, here's how you can recoup compensation for cross-border delivery issues by using Claimit's automated courier claims.

International e-commerce deliveries: more popular than ever

Millions of global customers. Billions of worldwide deliveries. Trillions of market value.

Cross-border e-commerce is bigger than ever and is expected to reach almost $5 trillion in market value by 2032. Largely fueled by social media and advances in logistics technology, today's online shoppers are scouring the internet for the widest e-commerce choice and best prices - no matter where they're based.

    According to DHL's 2025 e-commerce trends report:

    • 27% of global shoppers buy online once per week - with China (58%), Thailand (41%) and India (41%) the most active online buyers.

    • 59% of shoppers buy from foreign-based retailers - particularly the UAE (74%) and Nigeria (72%).

    • One in ten shoppers buys internationally at least once per week - rising to as high as 23% in India, 21% in Thailand and 17% in the US.

    • 44% of Gen Z buy from other countries at least once a month - Gen Z (66%) and Millennials (64%) are more likely than Gen X (55%) and Baby boomers (48%) to buy internationally.

    • 70% of shoppers will only buy from countries they trust - with China (57%), the USA (41%) and the UK (23%) the top three most trusted destinations for global shoppers.

International e-commerce shipping: more difficult than ever

Despite advances in logistics, international shipping is beset by regulatory, economic and customer issues. Take the UK for example. 50% of UK shoppers buy goods from outside the UK (i.e. Korean cosmetics, Chinese fast fashion or German electronics) and many of the UK's most iconic e-commerce brands (i.e. Frasers and Emma Bridgewater) are prominent international shippers.

But, when shipping internationally, UK-based e-commerce brands have to deal with:

    • Post-Brexit customs controls. Every e-commerce parcel crossing into the EU now requires cumbersome customs documentation, which adversely impacts couriers' delivery efficiency.

    • International shipping costs. International shipments are subject to import taxes, additional transport costs and changing economic regulations. For instance, major UK couriers, including Royal Mail, suspended deliveries to the US in August 2025 following the removal of a tariff exemption for parcels worth under $800.

    • International delivery expectations. Couriers not only have to navigate heightened customer preferences - i.e. 72% of international shoppers want free delivery and 52% want faster delivery - but also different delivery expectations. In the UK, for example, 68% of shoppers want home delivery and 9% want delivery to a parcel locker, but in Poland, only 26% want home delivery and 56% want a parcel locker.

International e-commerce shipping: Claimit is your insurance

Add all these international shipping complications together and it means one thing: less reliable cross-border deliveries.

This causes a major headache for e-commerce companies trying to grow internationally. But with Claimit's automatic courier claims compensation, you can ship internationally without fear.

Let's say you use UPS to ship outside the UK. The US courier giant delivers packages to over 10 million customers in over 200 countries – every business day. But UPS also attracts the 4th highest number of compensation claims on the Claimit platform for losses, damages and delays.

If you ship internationally with UPS, Claimit's platform will:

    1. Automatically identify lost or damaged UPS shipments

    2. Check UPS' Ts & Cs for claim eligibility

    3. File a claim with all the key documentation, including tracking number, contents description, and photos

    4. Track the claim status

    5. Get your payout 40% quicker than manual claims processes (we achieved a 94% success rate for UPS claims in 2024)

Example: Iconic British pottery brand Emma Bridgewater, which makes almost two million pieces each year, uses FedEx for its international shipments. Claimit not only resolved a host of invoice issues with FedEx, but enabled Emma Bridgewater to improve its claim success rate to 80% and recoup £10,000 per month.

    Do you ship internationally?

In Europe, 6% of deliveries encounter an issue. Therefore, if you send 10,000 shipments internationally with an average order value of £50, you could save £30,000 simply by using Claimit.

Claimit works with 100+ major international couriers - from FedEx and UPS to DPD and DHL - and had an average claims success rate of 71% in Q3 2025. Find out how much you could save with Claimit.
